Castel-Nègre - a little geography

You will find the Haute Vallée de l’Aude vineyards, part of the Limoux appellation, some 35 kilometres to the south of Carcassonne, on the D118 road between Limoux and Quillan. This is in the heart of the Cathare country.

The Haute Vallée is bordered to the west by the Corbières massif, from which it receives its Mediterranean influences, and to the east by the Chalabre and Razés mountains, which give it an oceanic character.

Its proximity to the Pyrenees brings abundant rainfall and a temperate climate.

We are situated on the Route of the Cathare Castles, of which Puivert, Puylaurens and Peyrepertuse are the best-known.

On a visit to us you can also make a detour to Rennes le Château (mentionned in the Da Vinci Code and a bare 5 km away), to visit its church that is said to be inhabited by the Devil and search for its famous treasure. You could also explore the breathtaking scenery of the Gorges de Galamus near the village of Bugarach (25 km); visit the Arques or Serres Châteaux (15 km) or, of course, the magnificent cathedral and medieval village at Alet les Bains (3 km).

You may find yourself wishing to extend your stay in order to really get to know the Haute Vallée de l’Aude...
